AC Milan triumphs at Club World Cup 1987

On June 21, 1987, AC Milan started the Mundialito de Clubs with a 2-0 victory over Porto, marking the beginning of their journey to winning the trophy for the first time. The previous editions of the tournament in 1981 and 1983 were won by Inter and Juventus. The Rossoneri continued their success by beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 on 23 June, drawing goalless against Inter on 27 June and winning 1-0 against Barcelona on 29 June.  The opening match against Porto was also Frank Rijkaard's debut for AC Milan. Pietro Paolo Virdis scored from the penalty spot and Claudio Borghi added a second goal. Rijkaard, on loan for the summer tournament, started as a defensive midfielder before being replaced by Zanoncelli in the second half. In the second match, against PSG, Massaro scored the decisive goal, and this match coincided with Arrigo Sacchi's first appearance in the stands as the future coach of Milan. The victory over Barcelona, ​​which gave Milan the Mundialito title, also marked Ray Wilkins' farewell from the San Siro. After winning 1-0, the English midfielder was honored by the Rossoneri fans with a standing ovation. His bond with the stadium remained strong over the years, and after his death in 2018, the Milan stadium and fans paid tribute to him with a minute's silence and black armbands.
