Aston Villa faces challenges with squad depth and financial constraints. Nick Mashiter focused on these aspects of the club in a special question and answer session. There are questions about the future of players such as Evan Guessand, Tammy Abraham, Lamare Bogarde and Leon Bailey. The club does not have much freedom in its lineup and needs reinforcements. Guessand and Bailey are players who can leave the club if the opportunity arises, but the transfer market will be decisive. Villa may have difficulty moving players on high contracts, especially those who did not impress last season. Bailey struggled with injuries during his time at Roma, and Guessand failed to impress on loan at Crystal Palace, which was also due to injuries. Bogarde is attracting interest and may leave the club, although he played 44 games last season and was a useful player. Abraham didn't make the expected impact but could still be useful for Unai Emery.

The club's budget is largely dependent on player sales, especially since they must comply with a spending agreement with UEFA. Last year Villa was fined £9.5m for breaching UEFA's squad costs rule and had to agree to a three-year plan. On Tuesday, the club was again fined £19.4 million, of which £12.9 million is suspended unless the club significantly reduces its squad cost ratio by 2026. According to the plan agreed with UEFA, in the 2026-2027 season, the club must achieve a maximum football earnings deficit of EUR 0 million for the reporting period ending in 2027. This naturally increases the pressure on the club's transfer activities.
