Democratic Republic of Congo with historic advancement to the 2026 World Cup

ATLANTA — The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently experiencing the biggest moment in its sporting history. Les Léopards advanced to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup after a thrilling 3-1 win over Uzbekistan. The match played in Atlanta had its dramatic moments, but ultimately Congo emerged victorious. Even before the match started, the entire team was playing with a huge burden on their shoulders. Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi called on the entire nation to support the team, highlighting the unity and determination of more than 100 million citizens. Despite difficulties, such as the inability to attend one of the most recognizable fans, Lumumba Vea (Michel Kuka Mboladinga), who did not receive a visa to the USA, the team did not disappoint. The match did not start well for Congo as Uzbekistan scored a goal in the 20th second, although it was ultimately canceled due to offside. Moments later, Uzbekistan took the lead and the pressure on the Congolese increased. However, towards the end of the match, Les Léopards showed character. Yoane Wissa equalized from the penalty spot, and a moment later Fiston Mayele put the team ahead. Wissa sealed the victory by scoring a goal just before the end of regular time.  "It was a crazy match," Wissa said after the game. "We started very badly, but we managed to turn things around. Now we are writing our history in black ink and we must be proud of it." Coach Sébastien Desabre was proud of his players, emphasizing their determination and fighting spirit. Even though the next clash with England will be a huge challenge, the team is ready to face any opponent. "We will fight," Desabre announced.
