Simkin, 21, made 15 appearances for Stoke in the Championship last season, where he replaced injured Swedish international Viktor Johansson and Gavin Bazunu. During the first half of the season, Simkin was loaned to Leyton Orient, but Stoke decided to recall him in January. Previously, the goalkeeper gained experience on loan at clubs such as Solihull Moors, Forest Green Rovers and Walsall. He played 47 games for Walsall, helping them progress to the League Two play-offs in the 2024-25 season. Simkin is also part of the England Under-21 squad and was part of the team that won the European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia in 2025. “As a young goalkeeper, I know I need game time and Doncaster is the perfect place to continue my development,” Simkin said on the Doncaster club's official website. Doncaster goalkeeper coach Kyle Letheren noted: "It's amazing that Stoke have trusted us to continue Tommy's development and we're looking forward to working with him." Doncaster finished the 2025–26 season in 14th place in League One, after winning League Two and gaining promotion the previous season.
