Historic point for Qatar in the match against Switzerland at the 2026 World Cup

Switzerland started the 2026 World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Qatar at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. In the first half, the Swiss took the lead when Monaco striker Embolo scored a penalty kick after a foul on Bologna's Remo Freuler. Qatar equalized in dramatic circumstances in the 94th minute, when Khoukhi scored a historic point for his national team. Even though Switzerland had the advantage for most of the match and created several opportunities to increase the score, Qatar's goalkeeper, Abunada, saved his team from losing further goals several times. In the second half, Manzambi, Embolo and Vargas had opportunities to give Switzerland victory, but none of them were converted.  Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui was full of praise for his players after the match: "Even taking part in the tournament was historic for us. Scoring a point against Switzerland is very important. We had many moments when we had to suffer, but this goal is a reward for our fight. We will continue to dream, it is our deserved right." In group B, after the first round, all teams have one point each: Switzerland, Canada, Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
