2026 World Cup incident: Commentator Warren Barton injured during match in Mexico
An unusual incident occurred during the 2026 World Cup match between Colombia and Uzbekistan at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico. Commentator Warren Barton, a former Newcastle player and England international, was hit by a projectile, possibly a bottle, which caused him to start bleeding. Barton commented on the meeting together with Jacqui Oatley for the American station Fox. It all started when Daniel Munoz scored the first goal for Colombia and both commentators were doused with beer by excited fans. Things escalated in the second half and Barton was hit in the head late in the match. Despite his injuries, he continued his work until the end, conveying the atmosphere in the stadium. Oatley, witnessing the incident, described the situation live: "Warren was attacked by a fan behind us... he threw a cup. I hope it was empty, is he OK?" Barton replied, "Yeah, I guess so. I'm seeing double for a few people." ![Image](https://s.yimg.com/os/en/the_independent_us_sports_articles_270/ab22a0575ec17977508634322dc6309a) Colombia, leading 2-1, defended the result, and in stoppage time Jaminton Campaz scored the third goal, giving his team the victory and the lead in Group K. This result put Colombia at the top of the group ahead of Portugal, which had earlier drawn with DR Congo. This was not the only unusual moment of this meeting. In the first half, the cameraman suffered a leg injury after a clash with Luis Diaz, who was fouled by Manchester City player Abdukodir Khusanov. The atmosphere in the stadium was tense throughout the match and the Barton incident only underlined the intensity of the event. “No one in Mexico will sleep soundly tonight,” Oatley concluded. --- ## Related Articles 1.
