The Netherlands will face Japan in their first match at the 2026 World Cup, but NEC midfielder Kodai Sano will not be on the pitch. Instead, Japan's squad included his older brother, Kaishu Sano, who is considered one of the key players of his national team. Although Kaishu may be less known to Dutch fans, he has already made a name for himself in Japan. ![Image](https://webp.vi.cdn.pxr.nl/news/2026/06/11/e9ef16afada9f4b46f9cb7d65f55f8d321e9cf64.jpg?width=1200) Coach Hajime Moriyasu's decision not to call up Kodai Sano for the World Cup was not a surprise to Japanese football experts. Japan have a lot of quality in the midfield position and Kaishu Sano is one of the standouts. Kaishu, three years older than Kodai, joined European club FSV Mainz 05 in 2024 from Kashima Antlers. His name is increasingly appearing in the context of interest from leading European clubs, which is not surprising considering his significant role in Mainz. Kodai Sano, although he remains in his brother's shadow, dreams of transferring from NEC and improving his position in the world of football. NEC coach Dick Schreuder has repeatedly emphasized that Kodai should follow the example of his brother, who already plays in the Bundesliga. Schreuder, who has experience working at Hoffenheim, points out that all players in this league have similar physical conditions to Kaishu. Kodai, if he wants to succeed at the next level, needs to work on his physical strength and "gain more power".
