According to The Athletic, City are still interested in Sandro Tonali and also admire Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, while Tottenham have entered into talks with Newcastle for Tonali. This immediately raises a bigger question for Etihad, namely Rodri. The Spaniard has one year left on his contract and, sources say, "there are no signs of a new deal for now." For a club built on confidence, control and rhythm, this is no small detail. Tonali would not be Rodri's direct replacement. That's why this idea is intriguing. He is more mobile, more vertical and naturally suited to maintaining midfield dynamics under pressure. The Athletic notes that Tonali could bring an "energetic, box-to-box presence" to City, especially as Enzo Maresca transforms the team following the departure of Bernardo Silva. Pep Guardiola often relied on intelligence and positioning over raw dynamics. Maresca can expect more legs, more transitions, more drive in midfield. The combination of Tonali and Anderson would be bold. It would require City fans to accept a different kind of control, less metronomic, more aggressive, more physical. Theoretically, this could freshen up a team that has seemed too rote at times. City has made progress in other areas. The signing of Josko Gvardiol on a five-year contract is important not only because of its quality, but also because it represents the age profile of City's new cycle. Jeremy Doku's impending contract extension also suggests the club is protecting players who could define the Maresca era. This is important when several other players face uncertainty. Nathan Ake is likely to leave, while Mateo Kovacic, Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders could move. Ruben Dias is interested in Real Madrid, Savinho is interested in Tottenham, while Kalvin Phillips and Jack Grealish may be looking for new clubs, either permanently or on loan. For all the names in the game, Rodri remains the key issue. If he signs, City can rebuild their team around him. If not, every transfer target in midfield takes on added importance. Enzo Maresca may not want Guardiola's replica. He may want to evolve. Tonali, Anderson, Gvardiol and Doku point to a younger, more dynamic City. Whether this becomes reinvention or an unnecessary risk depends on one contract above all others.
