Just a few yards away, Lamine Yamal was scanning the scene. He searched. He waited. The four Colombians stood together, discussing tactics, planning their next move. And in the far corner, Erling Haaland, carrying a plate of fries, was returning to his wife amidst all this confusion and through the clouds of smoke coming from the smoke machine. It's Friday night. This is downtown Miami. It's party time. The bar on East Flagler Street was buzzing and dancing to the beat of the World Cup. Various nations were represented in this local temple. They mixed up. They talked. They danced. They absorbed the atmosphere. But not everyone. Five figures stood out in the middle of the dance floor, standing out for their alertness and focus amidst the chaos. A large projection screen at the end of the room lit up with a moving image of the Belgium vs. New Zealand match, the clash of the evening in the final group round. The speakers in the bar died down and buckets of beer began spilling out at the tables. The music turned up the volume and the five Scots of the Apocalypse began to drink, but not at all in time with the music. Each of the smaller screens located throughout the bar displayed the Egypt-Iran match, with the dreams of the two nations hanging in the air. Their eyes didn't even move an inch towards the TV when this meeting started. For these men in Scottish kilts, vodka and beer, only one thing mattered - the result of the match played in Seattle. And it was a result that the other Scots in the bar didn't like for any reason. These five had their mission. Because even though Scotland coach Steve Clarke had given up hope that his team would make it out of the group, these men had not given up hope. But there was little hope. The Scots had to count on a combination of results unprecedented in the history of football. They needed the third-placed teams in the four other groups to have three points each and a goal difference worse than -3. Or, even better, they had fewer points. Until now, until Spain's victory on Friday night in Miami, every established group had done exactly the opposite. Now, after Egypt had won their match, Scotland needed two of the three teams whose group fates were still hanging in the balance to get them out of third place. It's an absurd, even impossible request, but not entirely impossible, considering that the bar's guests included people from Scotland who were having a great time. Actually, they were just having fun. There was no joy at the table where the men of Apocalypse were sitting. When Mahmoud Saber scored for Egypt in the ninth minute of the match, there was tension at their table. The music in the bar turned up even louder and the guests started dancing. And only the men in Scottish kilts continued to sit, showing no emotion. They didn't seem to care at all what was going on in other matches. They only counted on the result of the match that interested them the most. And he wasn't interested in them at all. In the second half of the match, after Saber was replaced, the match gained more drama. In Iran, after changes in the team, the team started attacking with greater intensity. And at the end of the match, when the goal was scoredfor Iran, the Apocalypse team was terrified. Emotions appeared on their faces when Mehdi Taremi hit the crossbar of the Egyptian goal. Was this a defensible situation? Or should the judge overturn it? Was it a goal? Wasn't that a goal? Or should there have been a goal? All these questions were asked by people in Scottish costumes, closed in their circle, as if in a protective bubble, when the referee's final whistle announced that the match was over. And unfortunately for Scotland, it ended in a draw. And now Scotland's need for other teams has become even more absurd. They now had to rely on Scotland being counted last in each of the three groups that had not yet been decided. And only in these groups were the third-placed teams that had three points and a goal difference worse than -3. It all really bordered on fantasy. The lights came on in the bar and its guests began to disperse. Only five Scots remained outside. And they too had to leave the bar because its owner asked them to do so, saying it was time to close. They stepped out into the hot Miami air. And, how ironic it was, still in the same place, in the same circle, standing, they began to discuss what everything would look like now. What are their hopes, what are their goals? It was a discussion between five men who didn't care at all what other people thought, for example that their costumes were already dirty and stale. They didn't care that there were a lot of people hanging out in Miami at night who were high or drunk and had some weird ideas. They were only focused on themselves. And what awaits Scotland in the future. Some absurd ideas, bordering on fantasy, but they clung to them as if they were the only lifeline. --- ## Related Articles 1.
