Nehemiah Oriola is on the verge of signing a new contract with Brighton & Hove Albion. The new contract for the former Manchester United and West Ham United player will run until 2029, with an option to extend for a further year to the club. Oriola's current contract expires in a year, but Brighton have decided to keep the 19-year-old winger so that he can fight for a starting place under Fabian Hurzeler. Brighton faces an intense first half of the season in the Premier League, League Cup and Conference League. They could potentially play as many as six additional games in the league stage of the latter competition if they progress through the two-legged play-offs on August 20 and 27. Hurzeler needs a bigger squad to cope with the workload, so talented young players like Oriola will have more opportunities to showcase their skills before his situation is reassessed in January. Oriola started in West Ham's academy and spent three years at Manchester United before moving to Brighton in 2023 by mutual consent. He rose quickly through the U21 team, which caught Hurzeler's attention. The German coach described Oriola as an "incredible talent" after including him in the matchday squad for the first time for the 2-1 home win over Newcastle United last October. "He is a very good left-footed player, great in one-on-one duels, reacts well after losing the ball," added Hurzeler. Oriola made his senior debut as a substitute in the dying minutes of a 3-0 home win over Leeds United in November. He was in the matchday squad for six Premier League games last season and helped the U21s win the Premier League 2 play-offs in May, beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final. Oriola scored eight goals and provided four assists in 18 Premier League 2 appearances for the U21s during the regular season. Born in England, Oriola also has the opportunity to represent Ghana or Nigeria internationally thanks to his parents.
