Ruben Amorim, former Manchester United coach, has been appointed as the new coach of the Italian giant, AC Milan. The 41-year-old Portuguese signed a two-year contract, replacing Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked after a dramatic decline in form at the end of the season, which resulted in the club failing to qualify for the Champions League. Italian media report that Amorim has waived the annual salary he still owed to Manchester United after his January sacking. AC Milan emphasizes that Amorim brings a "modern, dominant tactical approach". "There are ambitions that follow you throughout your career, and leading AC Milan has always been one of them," said the Portuguese coach. "I know exactly what this club stands for: history, prestige and an extraordinary fan base around the world. It's a challenge I accept with pride and enthusiasm." In February, Manchester United reported that Amorim's departure, along with his coaching staff, could cost the club up to £15.9 million. It is unclear whether United will have to include these savings in its upcoming financial results, due in the fall. Amorim was sacked after 14 difficult months at Old Trafford. He previously became one of the most sought-after young coaches in Europe through his time at Sporting CP, where he ended the club's 19-year wait for the domestic title in 2020-21 and then won it again in 2023-24. Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford in November 2024 after the club rejected his request to take over at the end of the season. Last month, sources close to Amorim distanced themselves from speculation about his return to Benfica when it became clear that Jose Mourinho was about to leave for Real Madrid. Former Fulham coach Marco Silva has already been appointed as his successor. Amorim's first match as Milan coach will be against Celtic on July 25, and the pre-season will ironically end with a match against Manchester United in Wrocław on August 15.
