Transfer tensions: Barcelona withdraws option to buy Marcus Rashford

The deadline for Barcelona to decide on the purchase of Marcus Rashford was June 16. The Catalan club decided not to use the option to buy the player for £30 million, which caused transfer tensions with Manchester United. Catalan officials believe that if they wait until the end of August, Old Trafford will succumb to pressure and accept the same amount to get rid of Rashford's high contract of £325,000 a week. Manchester United wants to resolve this situation as quickly as possible. Manager Michael Carrick wanted to include the English striker back in his team, but the club's management firmly blocked his plans. Rashford found himself in a difficult situation despite scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists in all competitions during his loan spell in Spain.  Barcelona, constrained by strict Financial Fair Play rules, initially proposed to pay the fee in three installments to protect its delicate financial situation. But now they sense an opportunity. By dragging out the negotiations, the Camp Nou authorities believe that panic on the transfer market will force Manchester United to make concessions. Does a permanent transfer for Rashford make sense for Barcelona? The answer is no. Leaving this option unimplemented should not be just a negotiation tactic, but the ultimate solution. It's not about Rashford's performance - scoring 14 goals in Spain is a great result. The problem lies in the structure of the squad. Barcelona recently spent a whopping £80m on Newcastle's Anthony Gordon, gaining killer speed on the left wing for Hansi Flick. Another expensive player in this position makes no sense when the real needs lie in the middle of the attack. Robert Lewandowski leaves. The top priority is Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez. Flick needs a striker. Clinical, deadly number nine. Spending precious funds on an unnecessary position when the team has no real threat in the center is ill-advised squad building. Barcelona must show rare financial discipline, ignore the temptation to look for a bargain on a famous player and invest the remaining budget in a real striker.
