Wolverhampton Wanderers have decided to fire Rob Edwards and intend to employ Cesar Peixoto, the current coach of Gil Vicente. This decision is surprising, especially since Edwards recently participated in the production of a video promoting the return of striker Raul Jimenez to Molineux. Edwards joined from Middlesbrough in November but failed to prevent them from being relegated to the Championship in April, ending their eight-year run in the Premier League. They ended the season in last place, 21 points behind a safe position.
Under 43-year-old Edwards, Wolves won their first Premier League match in January but could only manage two further victories, ending the season on a nine-game winless run. The club announced the departure of Edwards and his coaching staff, emphasizing the need for a change in sporting direction. In May, Edwards stated that Wolves' problems were not his fault and were the result of long-standing issues, but expressed optimism about the team's future.

Cesar Peixoto, a 46-year-old coach, is expected to replace Edwards. He guided Gil Vicente to sixth place in the Primeira Liga last season. After ending his playing career in 2019, Peixoto held various coaching positions in Portugal, and his work with Gil Vicente was the longest at one club. He was hired last March, helping the team avoid relegation and finish the 2025-26 season in 13th position.
As a player, Peixoto played, among others, in Porto, Braga and Benfica, and also played once for the Portuguese national team in 2008. Although Gil Vicente is a relatively unknown club in the Primeira Liga, Peixoto stands out as one of the most promising coaches in Portuguese football. His attacking style of play allowed the team to compete with clubs with much larger budgets, including Braga and Sporting CP. Thanks to this, Peixoto was one of the candidates to take over Benfica after the departure of Jose Mourinho.
If he is hired, Peixoto will likely bring with him several members of his staff from Gil Vicente. This group is relatively young, with many of its members in their 30s, and now has the chance to make a name for itself in English football.
