Yesterday, Switzerland played its first match in the 2026 World Cup, drawing with Qatar 1-1. The match took place at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Switzerland controlled the course of the match and was the only team to create scoring opportunities. Both teams missed opportunities to score goals in the first half, but Breel Embolo scored a goal for Switzerland in the 13th minute of the match. In the second half, the Swiss had several more opportunities to increase the score, but in the end the result did not change. In added time, during a corner kick for Qatar, a cross was sent to the head of defender Boulem Khoukhi, who beat the Swiss goalkeeper, Yann Kobel, and the score was 1-1. This is the first point Qatar has won in World Cup history, having lost all their group matches in 2022 when they hosted the tournament.
