Rule changes for the 2026 World Cup: VAR, wasting time and player substitutions
The 2026 World Cup promises to be unique due to the introduction of numerous changes to the rules of the game. FIFA has decided on 11 new regulations aimed at speeding up matches and reducing potential refereeing errors. Pierluigi Collina, the head referee, is determined to improve the pace of play and minimize errors that affect the outcome of matches. The new rules will also apply to the Premier League, EFL and Scottish Premiership from next season. New powers for VAR have been introduced, as well as a number of measures to protect the pace of play and several adjustments to player behavior. One of the key elements is a five-second countdown for restarting the game after a throw-in or goal kick, which is intended to discourage players from prolonging the game. If a player delays the restart, the referee may decide to award a corner or give the ball to the opponent. Another new feature is the ten-second limit for a replaced player to leave the pitch. If he does not leave the field within this time, the team must play short for at least one minute. This rule will not be applied in the event of an injury to a player or concerns about his safety. ![Image](https://s.yimg.com/os/en/bbc_us_articles_995/6490ae4bdca71794f1cea594fed26351) Players will now be required to remain off the pitch for one minute after medical intervention, in an effort to reduce simulation and delays associated with fouls. Exceptions to this rule will include, among others: goalkeepers or serious injuries. The changes also concern VAR, which will be able to intervene in new situations, such as checking the correctness of the award of corner kicks or analyzing the second yellow card. Pierluigi Collina emphasizes that these changes are aimed not only at improving refereeing decisions, but also at protecting the spirit of sport. The new rules also aim to limit inappropriate behavior by players, such as leaving the pitch to protest against referee decisions or covering their mouths in confrontational situations. In such cases, referees will be able to show a red card.
