England avoided a historic defeat by beating DR Congo 2-1 thanks to a late turnaround at the Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday. This victory ensured that England advanced to the 1/8 finals of the 2026 World Cup for the third time in a row.

The match started with DR Congo quickly taking the lead after a goal by left winger Brian Cipenga. The player found himself alone on the left side of the penalty area and placed the ball between the near post and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. DR Congo kept up the pressure and came close to increasing the score before the break.

England, although not looking too dangerous immediately after the break, gradually built their advantage until Harry Kane equalized the score for the Three Lions in the 74th minute. Just as the match seemed headed to extra time, Kane scored again for England 11 minutes later. Harry Kane became the first English player to score twice in a World Cup knockout match since Gary Lineker against Cameroon in 1990.

England will now face Mexico in the round of 16, with the match taking place on Sunday, July 5 at Mexico City Stadium.
