Chelsea have announced that Enzo Maresca will pay them compensation as he is confirmed as Manchester City's new coach. Former Blues manager Maresca, 46, has signed a three-year deal at City to replace Pep Guardiola, who stepped down in May after a decade of trophy-laden years. It took some time to agree his appointment at Manchester City due to talks between Chelsea and City over a compensation package, which included an undisclosed sum for the Italian. According to a source, Manchester City will pay Chelsea around £17 million. The compensation package is separate to the one Chelsea claims has been agreed with Mareska. BBC Sport has not yet verified the details of this compensation. The Italian coach left Chelsea in January after a run of one win in seven Premier League games. Chelsea's statement at the time suggested the decision was mutual, with both Mareska and the board agreeing that "the change gives the team its best chance of improving its season." However, Maresca confirmed he had resigned at Stamford Bridge and admitted it had "opened the way" to joining Manchester City. A Chelsea statement, which described Maresca's resignation as "a decision not to continue to fulfill his duties", said a confidential agreement had been reached with the Italian regarding compensation owed to the club. Maresca, who spent one season as Guardiola's assistant at Manchester City during their treble-winning season, apologized to Chelsea for the way he left the club. "The decision was mine alone," Maresca wrote on Instagram. "I acknowledge that my resignation from Chelsea during the season caused disruption to the club and for that I apologize. It was neither my intention nor my will." Analysis – Maresca's departure hurt Chelsea Everyone at Chelsea respects Maresca's managerial skills, but his departure ultimately ended in chaotic fashion. His decision to resign, which he has now admitted "opened the way" for him to join Manchester City, has proven detrimental to Chelsea's season. It contributed to a chaotic campaign in which Chelsea finished 10th, another manager was sacked and the club lost millions in unused television revenue. This led to a protracted legal dispute that was only recently resolved, allowing all parties to close the chapter. For Chelsea, however, Maresca's first season will be remembered as their most successful under owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. The club qualified for the Champions League, the only such achievement in the four years since taking over the club from Roman Abramovich, and won its first trophy in the Club World Cup and the Conference League. Manchester City, in turn, has secured a top-rated manager from Chelsea, who also has the backing of Pep Guardiola, having previously been his assistant during the treble-winning season.
