But it was the man from Malvern, Worcestershire, who was responsible for looking after the players before their 1966 triumph. Dr Neil Phillips, who died in 2015 aged 83, was the team doctor that won the famous Jules Rimet Cup, working with stars such as Bobby Moore and Sir Geoff Hurst. "He was so proud to be England's team doctor," recalled his daughter Annie Onions ahead of this year's tournament in North America. "What amazed him as he stood on the pitch in 1966 before the final was that he was from Wales, his favorite sports were cricket and rugby, he had done a six-month internship in gynecology and ended up as England's team doctor in the World Cup." “It was always like a daydream for him, standing there on the field and being a part of it,” she added. Phillips' role landed him an appearance on Top of the Pops with the Three Lions when their World Cup song, 'Back Home', gained popularity four years after their World Cup triumph. His bond with England captain Moore was one of the most memorable moments of his time with the national team. Onions recalls visits to the legendary West Ham player's leather factory in London during his childhood when his family visited the capital. “I had a bright red suede vest with fringe on the bottom,” she said. "From a young age I was in love with Bobby Moore, I thought he was the greatest hero in the world, and visiting there was just wonderful." However, the job was not without its challenges, especially as part of a small team where Phillips even had to use his vacation time to look after the team during competitions. "Now, when they go to the World Championships, they have a whole retinue of psychologists and physiotherapists," Onions said. "Back then it was just Sir Alf Ramsey, my father and Les Cocker - that's all." Speaking to the BBC in 2010, Phillips revealed the secret behind England's only victory on the world stage. "I know how we did it, and it's all thanks to one man - Alf Ramsey," he said at the time.
