Officially: Grimaldo moves from Leverkusen to Atletico Madrid

The transfer of Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer 04 Leverkusen to Atletico Madrid has been officially confirmed. The Spanish defender signed a four-year contract with the Madrid club, which will pay a total of EUR 25 million for him, including bonuses. This is a serious loss for Leverkusen, as Grimaldo was one of the leading players of their team that won the German championship in 2024 and reached the Europa League final.

Grimaldo, who joined Bayer without a transfer from Benfica Lisbon in 2023, quickly became a key player in the team, playing the role of both left-back and playmaker. Last season in the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League, he scored a total of 27 points in the Canadian classification (14 goals and 13 assists). His style of play and precise free kicks were an invaluable asset to the team.

About his departure from the club and the new chapter of his career, Grimaldo says: "What we achieved at Leverkusen was special and will remain in my memory forever. Now I am fulfilling my dream of playing in one of the best teams in my homeland." Grimaldo, who is playing with Spain in the World Cup this week, has played 145 games for Bayer over three years, scoring 30 goals and assisting 48 more.
