Tottenham Hotspur has once again proven effective on the transfer market. After signing the Dutch representative Jan Paul van Heck and players available on a free transfer, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, the Londoners, according to the English media, also won the competition for Mateus Fernandes.

The Portuguese midfielder, who was relegated to the Championship last season with West Ham United, will join Spurs for a fee of €98 million, making this a record transfer in the club's history. Never before have Tottenham paid such a large amount for a player. The previous record was the transfer of Domin Solanke from Bournemouth in 2024, which amounted to EUR 65 million.

Tottenham's offer allegedly scared Manchester United, who were also interested in Fernandes, but have now decided to focus on other options to strengthen the midfield. Real Madrid were also interested in Fernandes after their new coach, José Mourinho, expressed his desire to sign the midfielder, but the Spaniards have not yet made a concrete offer.

Fernandes, who surprisingly was also relegated last year, this time with Southampton, was one of the few bright spots at West Ham last season and has a lot going for him.
